Deer Hunting Tips

Deer hunting tips are many and sometimes the old tried and true methods still work best. I often think  tips in magazines and on TV shows are often created to fill space or sell us the next hot product.

That is why we made this section for deer hunting tips. Sometimes these tips may include gizmos and gadgets but one thing is certain, they have already worked for other hard hunting people just like you.

If you are looking to try something new or just put the odds in your favor next deer season, try a few of these tips and you just might make out better then expected.

Knowledge is power, so share what you know. Have a tip that has worked for you in the past, let others know what it is. Making other hunters more sucessful may just keep them from playing video games instead. Know what I mean???

Registered members can post there deer hunting tips here as well. Registration is 100% free and we never seel or share you information with anyone. Registration is simply a tool we use to keep all the porn star ads off the site.

check out some of the tips below and feel free to add your own or comment on the ones already listed.

Scouting, Scouting, Scouting
Large Buck Rub found while scoutingI have often thought of scouting for Whitetail Deer as the hunt before the hunt. The task of hunting for sign that will eventually and hopefully tell me where to hunt. Unfortunately for many people new to the world of hunting and some (hunters that should know better), scouting is something usually thought of as taking place before the actual hunting season.

If we think of scouting as something separate from hunting, then we tend to put some limits on our ability to accomplish the task at hand, harvesting game.

QDM and Your Neighbors

In the begining of 2006 I joined my first hunt club. I have two youth hunters that started hunting in 2005 and after a frustrating season and no deer on public land or a few properties I have permission to hunt, I decided it was time to make a change. This change was due to the fact that I wanted a better quality hunt for myself and my kids. The prices of quality leases and purshaing my own land swayed me towards the hunt club idea. It simply was afordable.

Let Other Hunters Work For You

Arial photo of hunting landAnyone that has hunted public land knows that others in the woods can hurt your hunt. On the other hand they can help it as well. With a little planning, you can use the wind and other hunters to move deer in your direction. This works on public land or private property as you will see in the example to the left. These are two properties that I have permission to hunt. (indicated in yellow). The red is a farm that is leased out for hunting to a pretty large group of hunters. So, how do we use the other hunters and the wind to help us hunt? Lets start with the wind. On a normal day the prevailing wind in our location is from the West Northwest. When it is later in the season and the weather starts to turn colder, the cold fronts tend to come in on a North Northeast wind.

Time To Replace That Bow String?

Picture of nocking points on bow stringA good tube of bow string wax and regular applications to the string and serving will prolong the life of any bow string. This however does not remove the need to replace the string and or cables on a regular basis. Many manufacturers recommend replacement of the bow string annually. If you are a competitive shooter or think you probably shoot considerably more then the average hunter, this may be more often than once a year.

Strings used to show signs of wear in the form of discoloration or fraying, letting the shooter know it was time to change them.

Find Those Whitetail Deer Now
We all know the guy that lives near by and gets that big buck every year. What is his secret? I bet you a dollar to a doughnut, he spends allot of time scouting for them all year long.
It is no secret that Whitetails are creatures of habbit. What better way to find their habbits, then to spend time watching them? The summer months can be spent sitting in a stand, in your truck or on a hillside watching your favorite hunting spots. Be carefull not to move in to close and to spook them. A good pair of binoculars or spotting scope make this a bit easier. Take a note pad with you and write down what you see. Make notes about where they enter the area from and where the leave it. Pay attention to the wind direction and the weather conditions. If you see deer, chances are the wind and weather plays apart as to why they are there. Anything you can make a note of that might help you in finding them again will put the odds in your favor and being able to watch and follow them all summer, helps take the guess work out of where they are come hunting time.
I bet you have heard, 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the deer. The numbers may be a bit over the top but the idea is true. These guys scout scout scout, spending allot of time watching their deer. Apply the 80-20 rule (80% scouting - 20% hunting) and you wil be on your way to putting a tag on that Whitetail buck this fall...
